The rest of the country is filled with Medieval and Gothic history and architecture, whilst home to some really fun activities during the day.
- Mild spring, perfect summer.
- History, art, architecture and more.
- Fries, Waffles, Chocolate. Wow.
Sanctuary Wood Museum
Once home to British Troops, Sanctuary Wood Museum offers a rare opportunity to visit the trenches and learn about the daily horrors British Servicemen suffered during the First World War, and the preserved farmhouse contains artefacts found on the site after the war.
In Flanders Fields Museum
Located in the centre of Ypres, the museum offers workshops and talks to make the deep history of the First World War accessible and understandable. The museum is filled with exhibits of aspects of the war, from the people on the frontlines to the weaponry and tools.
Menin Gate
The Menin Gate memorial honours British & Commonwealth servicemen who died in World War I and whose graves are unknown. The size of the gate and the number of names are touching yet harrowing. The gate also holds a moving daily tribute to the fallen every day at 8 p.m.
Mini Europe
Itโs like Europe butโฆ smaller.
At the foot of the Atomium, Mini-Europe is filled with over 300 tiny monuments with a ridiculous amount of detail. Thereโs a mini Vesuvius (including an eruption!), Viking stuff, and even something onย (checks notes) Brexit.
Gravensteen Castle
Everyone loves a castle, and Gravensteen is top-notch. Itโs almost a millennium old and is one of the few medieval castles in Flanders. A great day out, and a great way to learn about some medieval history.
Antwerp Zoo
The oldest zoo in Belgium,ย Antwerp Zoo makes an excellent excursion. The zoo is massive, covering over 10 hectares, and the zoo offers talks throughout the day for those wanting to learn about the worldโs fauna.
Historic Centre of Brugge
So good itโs a UNESCO World Heritage site!
